Every so often I'll watch a TikTok video or see an Instagram post that influences my perspective on creating .While scrolling through TikTok I came across a video featuring Rick Rubin (music producer) discussing how your art is like a diary entry, so how can anybody judge your diary entry? Or say whether it is good or bad if it's your experiences.
I was fascinated by the idea, mainly because it's difficult to not consider what an audience might feel when creating and that most of my work is like a diary entry in some way shape or form. Rubin's suggestions made me think of my favorite Warhol quote: "Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding make even more art.” So anytime I started to write and hit a “paralysis by analysis” moment, lost in how an audience will interpret what I’m doing. I quickly would think about the Warhol quote and the Rick Rubin diary entry suggestions to keep me pushing... that is until I hit a roadblock that made me question Rick Rubin’s diary entry concept. Which was the massive backlash and mockery of Jennifer Lopez's documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told and her film This is Me Now Both films were certainly "diary entryish" Considering the buzz. I watched both films and found them to be minorly off putting because it’s a vanity project and the title the “GREATEST” Love Story Never Told and This is “ME” now is a concoction of grandiosity, with a hefty side of cliche topped with self absorption. In the documentary Ben Affleck states “ The movie wasn’t about me. It was about the ability to love yourself, and that love story is a lot harder to find than prince charming,” His comment about Lopez’s intent on the film is a valid run of the mill well meaning thought to put out in the universe. Love yourself!! Ironically, everyone hated it. I don’t know anymore.. diary entry.. yeah.. how can anyone judge? Well they do, it’s unavoidable which leads to my very true yet surface thought: you can’t escape rejection or criticism.
